                    NCWA Foreign Affairs Book Club

The NCWA book club meets

(usually) the first Tuesday of the month

from November to April

via Zoom from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.

       All members are invited.

Bill Korstad, Chair

The 13th year of the NCWA Foreign Affairs Book Club looks at a world in the throes of a quietly disintegrating global order that's been in place for the past three-quarters of a century. American supremacy is giving way to an array of regional powers, many of which are autocratic, and an alliance of these powers threatens our grip on international order. Our book selections this year have reflected that reality.

BOOK CLUB  2025/26 SCHEDULE

1. November 4 - ZBIG: The Life of Zbigniew Brzezinski, America’s Great Power Prophet by Edward Luce.

Followup after the discussion:

An interview with Brzezinski by IRIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST4DkSqRH8c

A 2014 interview by Politico: https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/11/its-time-for-a-new-opening-to-china-112656/

2. December 2 - The Man Who Would Be King: Mohammed bin Salman and the Transformation of Saudia Arabia by Karen Elliot House, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter. It is a concise, interview-driven portrait of MBS and his sweeping social/economic reforms and grand mega projects alongside autocratic consolidation and ruthless power plays. We want a book on China in January and a book on drones in February. Both are being researched. The following are books that have been suggested so far:

1. Michael O’Hanlon’s new book tbd

2. On Xi Jinping by Kevin Rudd

3. The Eurasian Century by Hal Brands

4. Paper Soldiers: How the Weaponization of the Dollar Changed the World Order by Sale Mohsin— a timely read on sanctions, dollar power, and geoeconomics, central to U.S. statecraft today.

5. To Run the World: The Kremlin’s Cold War Bid for Global Power by Sergey Radchenko — a fresh Cold War reassessment that clarifies status, overreach, and today’s Russia debates.

6. A World Safe for Commerce: American Foreign Policy from the Revolution to the Rise of China by Dale C Copeland — long‑arc synthesis of U.S. strategy through trade and prosperity.
